"SecondLight works by replacing the standard glass table-top of the Surface with an LCD panel. This can switch rapidly between frosted - as with the normal Surface - or transparent, doing so at a rate imperceivable to the human eye. The projector underneath this LCD panel is synchronized to display either the standard image, when the LCD is frosted, or the secondary image, when the LCD is transparent.

In this way, both images are produced sequentially but at such a speed that the eye believes them to be simultaneous. Alternative uses suggested included showing more detailed mapping data on the handheld display, when held over a satellite image, and plotting out star constellations when held over an image of the night sky. Microsoft have not given any indication of whether this development to Surface will be included in future versions of the table."

Epsilon Eridani, located about 10.5 light-years from our sun, is surrounded by two asteroid belts that are shaped by planets, astronomers at SETI Institute and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics announced today.
But it's the possibility that currently undetected smaller planets could lie within the innermost asteroid belt that make the solar system intriguing to astrobiologists.
"This system probably looks a lot like ours did when life first took root on Earth," said SETI's Dana Backman, lead author of a paper on the 850-million-year-old star that will appear next year in The Astrophysical Journal, in a release.
Back then, the Kuiper Belt of space objects beyond Neptune was much larger. Over time, many of those objects fell into the inner solar system during a period about four billion years ago known as the Late Heavy Bombardment. The barrage of large asteroids pockmarked the rocky planets and possibly created our moon when a large object collided with Earth, expelling a huge amount of material into space.
Epsilon Eridani's evolution could provide insight into how universal these processes are. That's important because our solar system contains a planet — Earth — just far enough from the sun not to be fried but close enough to capture enough energy to support life as we know it. Similar systems could end up with planets orbiting in the same biological sweet spot.
"Epsilon Eridani looks a lot like the young solar system, so it's conceivable that it will evolve similarly," said astronomer Massimo Marengo of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, a co-author of the paper.

Your Very Own Robot Slave

It's taken time, but finally we have the first commercial robot slaves. One step closer to Arnie appearing naked in a town near you. Hot on the heals of Honda, Toyota have teamed up with more Japanese boffins to create a 'Home Assistant Robot'.

It's 155cm tall and weighs 130kg, so it's clearly not a toy and at $10,000 that makes it expensive even as a big boys toy.

Boffins say it can learn (if you beat it hard enough), it can clean rooms, put away dishes from a table, open and close doors and even do the laundry.

Amazing Paper Art

My art minion just posted me a surreal and yet totally wonderful page of paper art. Because most people have a 3 second attention span I've posted a few here but highly recommend checking out the original Paper Art page.

What I would like to say is that I'd love to see a time lapse video of some these, they clearly took ages. I'm also entirely sceptical that humans are clever enough to produce something like this without the help of HAL.

Instructions are....

Slice off bottom of watermelon so it won't roll around.
Peel green skin off of the watermelon.
Score brainy folds in white flesh.
With a sharp paring knife, carve channels out of melon to resemble cortical folds.

Science minion got back to me shortly after the 3D thing to point me at this interative mirror he found on Engadget.

Now it looks really good but the reality is what are you actually going to use this for. Engadget suggest it could showcase how a custom T-shirt might look but to honest that sounds weak. I'm thinking what would I look like if I had a bad ass afro or what would I look like if I had a massive sets of fake tits.

The video is worth watching as the technology is pretty impressive.

This Friday is looking to be a good one. My science minion informed me that our buddies over at techeblog.com stubbled onto an excellent 3D imaging device. The final nail in the coffin of the aweful red and blue 3D that not only made you look like a twat but was visually awful.

Crazy Shoe Rack

My day has been made. When someone comes up with a good invention, the first thing I think is why didn't I think of it. But on this one I didn't even think there was anything inherently wrong with shoe racks. Therefore I'll bow to superiority of the inventor of this ingenious concept.

But alas it's not a concept you can follow my link to buy the shoe rack. (I translated the page into English for you, well I didn't but those bods at Google did.)

The idea is that you simply kick your shoes into the rack and they're held safe and sounds until you next need them. Umm thinking more about it, my potential shoe kicking accuracy isn't quite as good as it could be, therefore positioning is going to be all important.

OK well I've stumped myself already, my earlier Amazing Tree House post is now old news.

What can you say about this place. It obviously isn't a real tree but looks pretty good and as a gimmick goes I've certainly seen worse.

I've never really been a massive fan of the Zonda. Sadly, as I'm not a fat opinionated journalist from Yorkshire, I've never been offered the chance to drive one. Therefore my liking or in this case disliking is based entirely on appearance.

Anyway it seems those pesky Italians have given the Zonda a make over. If your like me, you've got more chance of sleeping with a supermodel tonight than ever driving one of these, therefore pictures should be enough.

Amazing Tree House

Remember when you were a kid and a treehouse was probably the coolest place in the world to be. Well you probably even had a go at building one. This more than likely involved simply getting a palate into a tree. Some of you might have even built a good one, or had a good one built for you but my guess is it didn't look like this....

Cancer-Fighting Beer

Beer is hard as nails. So hard it's taking on the bad guy that is Cancer. As you may or may not know those guys in the white coats seem to think that a glass of wine a day keeps cancer at bay. This I'm told by my specialist science minion is due to a chemical called reverseitall, sorry resveratrol (wiki def).

Now those boffins have figured out a way of getting this wonderful chemical into beer.

Far Cry 2 - Out Tomorrow

So with less than 24 hours before the release it's now just about OK to start to get excited about Far Cry 2. I didn't play the original but I'm informed by one of my many caged minions that it was a big bad ass baby eating monster of a game.

Due to the bill paying requirements I have to sit at a computer screen for the obligatory 8 hours a day. By the time I return to my humble abode, sitting at a PC is as appealing as foreign objects down the old one-eyed muscle.

Luckily for me this time the release is multi format.
